Meet the Resident Turtles of Eri
Just beyond the shoreline, beneath the crystal-clear waters of Eri Maldives, a remarkable community has made the island home. Our vibrant house reef is home to resident sea turtles that return to the same coral gardens day after day, making every snorkelling adventure a chance to meet a familiar face. Seeing them thrive around Eri Maldives is incredibly special and reflects the health of our reef ecosystem, as well as our commitment to protecting the marine environment for generations to come.
The Residents of Our House Reef
Sea turtles are among the world’s most protected marine species, facing threats from habitat loss, plastic pollution, fishing gear and climate change. Each turtle that calls Eri home has its own unique appearance, making it possible to identify individuals over time. Most of our residents are graceful Hawksbill turtles, a critically endangered species known for their beautifully patterned shells and important role in maintaining healthy coral reefs. Otto, however, is truly unique. As the first Green sea turtle identified at Eri, he stands out among the Hawksbills and has become one of the reef’s most recognisable residents. Many of our turtles have even been named by guests, creating lasting connections between visitors and the marine life they encounter.
Every Turtle Has a Story
Some turtles are recognised by striking shell patterns, while others carry unique markings that make them unforgettable. Miss Torti can be identified by the distinctive split along the rear of her shell, while Shelby and Charlie’s Angel are known for their beautifully serrated shell edges. Hank is instantly recognisable thanks to his unusually small right hind flipper, while Lisa and Anna each carry barnacles that have become part of their identity. Kahanbu, Farfalle, Cappuccino and Cara all display unique white markings across their shells, making every sighting a rewarding experience for returning guests.
